Biography

William (known as Will) was born in Guildford and is now based in North Tawton in Devon where he has his studio in the centre of the town. Before moving to Devon he lived for nearly 20 years in the South West of France, laterly near Bayonne. Largely self taught he is an avid student of the arts. He had his first solo exhibition in 2001.

A landscape painter his paintings have an expressive dreamlike quality which has been described as musical. Harmony of colour and rythm within the paintings which on closer inspection show great attention to detail in the array of brush and knife marks. Subtle almost hidden shapes and symbols that give the viewer a personal route to interpret and imagine within each painting. Will paints in oils using a variety of techniques both old and new.

The sea is an important element in his life and he is a keen surfer in his spare time when not painting or with his familly.

"My painting is not about looking to recreate reality but to open the doors to my imagination and hopefully those of the viewer.

Somewhat like assembling a jigsaw puzzle and always searching the missing bit, that little gem of a touch that makes it special.

The use of explosive colour combinations alongside subtle paint mix, expressive brush strokes and impasto contrasts are all part of the puzzle and to me the great joy of slotting that final piece in place makes it utterly satisfying when it works"
